Below are the questions we are most frequently asked about System Scheduler.
If your question is not answered please try our online support forums or drop us an email at: support@splinterware.com
Q. What is System Scheduler?
A.
System Scheduler is a replacement for MS Windows Task Scheduler. It has a very wide variety of scheduling options. It is designed to be simpler to use than Windows Task Scheduler, but at the same time very powerfull.
The free version can schedule applications to run, popup reminders and watch for specific windows
and send keypresses.
The Professional version has additional options, for a full list read the Professional section on our page here: http://www.splinterware.com/products/wincron.htm
Q. Which versions of MS Windows does System Scheduler support?
A.
System Scheduler supports Windows 2000 and higher, through to Windows 7 and Server 2008, currently it is a native 32bit application, but runs well on 64bit Windows.
Q. Can I run tasks when logged OFF or when the console is LOCKED?
A.
If you are running the Free version you will need to stay logged in to run System Scheduler tasks, you can still run tasks while the computer is locked with someone logged in, however you can not send keypresses while the screen is locked.
System Scheduler Professional also runs as a Windows Service, this allows tasks to be run while logged off.
Q. Are there any plans to add additional scheduling options?
A.
Yes, we are always looking to improve System Scheduler. Quite a few new scheduling options
were introduced in version 2.x and futher added to in version 3.x and again in version 4.x. If you want to suggest any improvements please drop us an email at
feedback@splinterware.com.
Q. Can the System Scheduler Professional Service be run with different credentials?
A.
Yes, configure the Service through Control Panel - Services Manager as usual. By default when installed
the Service will use the LocalSystem account. If you wish you can configure it to use an account
with higher privledges. There are some things that Services can not do because they do not have a
'user profile' such as getting access to user defined printers or sending keypresses to an application
while logged off.
Q. What is the Licensing for the FREE System Scheduler?
A.
System Scheduler is provided free of charge (no
warranties implied whatsoever). You can use System Scheduler at home
or for business purposes. It can be redistributed freely but without modification of any kind.
It must not be re-sold either by itself or as part of other commercial software.
However, System Scheduler Professional is commercial sofware, after the initial 30 day evaluation
registration is required. A copy of the License.txt is included in the download.
Q. Can I schedule a task to run every 5 minutes?
A.
Yes. The easiest way is to use the schedule option 'Every Hour/Selected Minutes', leave the hours setting at
'Every Hour' and set the minutes to 'Every 5 Minutes'.
Q. Can System Scheduler close/terminate a running application?
A.
Yes. You can do this using the 'Window Watcher' feature. Configure System Scheduler to
watch for a particular window title (as it appears on the title bar) and send 'close signal'. You can
send the close signal to just the first matching window found, or all matching windows. Wildcards are permitted. The Professional version has additional options for watching and killing a running process by application file name.
Q. How do I backup my Events and/or copy them to another computer?
A.
All events are stored in the \EVENTS sub-folder under where you installed the
System Scheduler application. You just need to copy the .INI files (there is one
.INI file per event). However, on the destination computer although you can copy
the .INI files into the \EVENTS sub-folder you need to 'signal' System Scheduler
to re-read the list of events. You can either do this by running System Scheduler
and saving any existing/new event or your can force System Scheduler to re-read the
list by copying/creating this file in the \EVENTS sub-folder:
Update.flg
Just create/copy empty file with this name into the EVENTS sub-folder,
System Scheduler is setup to regularly check for the presence of this file
and re-read the list of events if there. If System Scheduler is setup
correctly you should see that the Update.flg disappears within a few seconds.
Q. Can System Scheduler Auto-Logon the computer when it reboots?
A.
Yes. For Windows 2000 and XP you can use the 'Logoff/Logon' computer event, for Vista and higher there is an option in Preferences to turn on MS Windows own auto-logon feature (though this is subject to security policies for domain connected computers).
Create a new 'Logoff/Logon' computer event, set it to 'Logon Computer' and enter
the logon credentials to use. Now, to make this auto-logon happen on boot-up you
need to set the 'Schedule' option to the following:
On Service Start
The above scheduling option occurs just after the logon box appears.
Now reboot the computer to test.
Remember: the logon feature is affected by the 'Logon Keypresses' preferences,
check the preferences are set correctly for your computer.
Q. Can I automatically lock my computer when it has been idle for 5 minutes?
A.
Yes. Create a 'Lock/Unlock Computer' event. Set the schedule option to
'On Idle' and set how many minutes idle time you would like to wait before the
computer locks.
Q. What exactly is a Single, Site and Enterprise license?
A.
